Recreational Boating Safety

Recreational Boating Safety by the Auxiliary encompasses three main areas of activity. First of these is Public Education. Flotillas offer Boating Safety Courses to the public several times during the year. The Courses vary in content and duration from several hours in one day to a couple of hours per week for eight or more weeks. This important function is becoming more and more essential for new boaters because of State laws requiring evidence of completion of an approved boating safety course as a requirement for operation of a boat. In addition to improved boating safety offered by these courses, the boat owner can claim a significant reduction in the cost of his boat insurance with evidence of a satisfactory completion of the course.

The second area of activity involves Marine Dealer visits by an Auxiliary Member. During these visits, the dealer is provided with the latest Boating Safety literature that he may make available to customers. Also, he may be provided with a schedule and location of upcoming Boating Safety Classes as well as a point of contact for the benefit of prospective students or prospective Auxiliary members. Visits to each Marine Dealer are conducted about four times during the year.

The third area of activity in Recreational Boating Safety provides for Courtesy Inspections of boats and Personal Water Craft (PWC). Inspections are carried out by specially trained Auxiliary Members to assist the boater in outfitting and maintaining a safe boat in accordance with Federal and State laws and guidelines. If a boat or PWC has been inspected and found satisfactory for boating safety, a decal certifying a satisfactory inspection has been performed will be awarded to the owner, who may display in on his boat or PWC.
